Traditional Japanese units

Japan still uses some pre-metric units. Property sizes are given in tsubo (about 3.306 m²) and rooms in jō, the area of one tatami mat (1.62 m² by the real estate advertising standard). Rice and sake are measured in gō (about 180 mL). Carpentry uses shaku (about 30.3 cm).

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 20 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 68 °F. Choose Temperature above to convert instantly.

Why are there two kinds of gigabyte?

GB uses powers of 1000 (used by drive makers) and GiB uses powers of 1024 (used by many operating systems). That’s why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GiB.

How big is a tatami mat (jō)?

It varies by region, from about 1.45 to 1.82 m². Japanese property listings use 1.62 m² per jō, which is the value used here.

Are US and UK gallons the same?

No. A US gallon is 3.785 L and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 L. Both are listed.
