How characters are counted
The counter uses grapheme clusters, the units a reader sees as one character. A family emoji 👨👩👧 or a letter with an accent counts as 1, even though it is stored as several code points. Byte counts show how much space the text takes in UTF‑8, which matters for databases and some form fields.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser and the text is never uploaded.
Why does the X count differ from the character count?
X counts Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and emoji as 2, and every link as 23, no matter how long it is.
How is reading time estimated?
About 238 words per minute for English and 500 characters per minute for Japanese, which are typical silent reading speeds for adults.
Does it count spaces?
The main total includes spaces. The panel also shows totals without spaces and without spaces or line breaks.
